THE MODEL

Hao Red Edition is a special model of the Porcelain Odyssey collection limited to 25 pieces. Released in celebration of Chinese New Year 2020, its design is an adaptation of the Hao with ruby red prints. The strap - a smooth top grain red calf leather with red lining - beautifully complements the piece.
 

THE STORY OF HAO

"Hao" (皓), denotes a white that is pure and without blemish, much like the dials of this model. From a structural perspective, it draws for inspiration on vintage « chronometre » dials from the 1940s/1950s. The result is a model with a strong personality, harking back to a millenary art and combining a solid structure with subtle aesthetics.

Noteworthy here is the subdial using Chinese patterns with a gripping asymmetry. The characters in the top left, You (酉), and bottom right, Mao (卯), represent the hours from 5PM to 7PM and 5AM to 7AM respectively. These serve as a reference to an ancient time-measurement system called the “12 Earthly Branches” within which each branch represents a two-hour segment.

The dial is complemented with a handcrafted set of rhodium-plated leaf hands that nicely fit the watch's overall aesthetic and can be fully appreciated thanks to a transparent double-domed sapphire crystal.

The movement is among the very best in China. It is a custom-made SL-3006 automatic mechanical movement with bi-directional winding, no phantom click (i.e. the entire date mechanism has been removed) and +/- 10 s/d accuracy - on par with its Swiss counterparts.

Finally, the case-back is certainly one of the most striking aspects of the collection. It represents a deeply-embossed figure of an animal of Chinese legend, Kunpeng. Said to be a colossal bird (Peng) with the ability to turn into an aquatic being (Kun), it is used as an allegory of the concept of Yin Yang. Rather than being separate entities, Kun and Peng are just two sides of the same element. Similarly, our goal with Atelier Wen is to break down false dichotomies and combine the experiences of East and West into a greater whole.
